  • With no one around for miles, one can concentrate on the details of Zion National Park in winter.  I found an alcove and slickrock amphitheater in the outback regions of the east section and hiked for miles in wonderful solitude. A fallen lightning-struck tree provided a nice abstract shadow study on the cold sandstone strata.

  • One of the many hoodoos along the Navajo Trail, Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah.

In western North America, HOODOO is defined as a natural column of rock, often in fantastic forms, that resemble (among other things) human figures and attributes.

  • Shot in Arches National Park, Utah. Here's a different take on Delicate Arch. I saw a resemblance of Atlas- the mythological Titan who was condemned to support the heavens upon his shoulders. A Nikon circular polarizer really brought out the clouds.

  • Evening light at Zion National Park.  The warmth of the illuminated stone cliffs betray the chill of the shadowlands within this deep canyon in the winter months. Still, if you want to avoid the masses and really get away from it all, try hiking Zion in the off-season. The mild winter and a dusting of snow really add another dimension to this magic place.
